What is the best amateur flash for Canon AE-1?
My Dad finally gave me his AE-1 for my birthday(I had been wanting it for years). I am considering buying a flash unit. There are so many models out there, I just want to know what would be the easiest to use for an amateur.
The Canon 199A was the Flash of choice when this little baby was at it's peak, see if you can get your hands on one of these.
If not any Auto / Dedicated flash for Canon will suffice, try to find one with bounce, that helps in many situations.
EBay have many fine examples of this good performer.
Good Luck and have fun with your Canon
Any advice for an amateur photographer taking candid shots at a party?
I'm an amateur photographer and i've only had my camera for a few months so I have not had very much time to practice with it, especially taking pictures of people. Can anyone give me some advice on taking candid shots in a party environment (anniversary party)? Like, when should i use flash? What are good angles? Just things like that, and any advice at all is welcome and greatly appreciated!
Get a decent flash unit, dedicated to your camera. The on camera flash is strictly for daytime fill or emergency blackmail situations.

Don't be fooled by candid party shots... they're not always all candid. You need them to be candid looking, not necessarily all surprises. Let people know you're going to take their picture, but to just act naturally. This works sometimes, and sometimes not. If you have only a couple people talking, I wouldn't worry about it, but if you have four or five or more people, let them know you're going to take a few shots. You don't want anyone picking their nose or gulping down a beer or rolling a smoke or something because they don't know you're there ready to take a pic. That might fall into the emergency blackmail category though...

Relax, float, don't socialize too much. Make sure you get lots of the guests of honor interacting with as many people as possible. That's what really counts. Good Luck.
I have a Nikon D80, am an amateur, and want to start working with off camera flash .....?
What should I buy for both strobes and strobe accesories to get started ?

Buy the Oct. 2008 issue of Shutterbug Magazine. It is devoted to light, lighting products and lighting techniques. You can go to www.shutterbug.com and read the articles if you can't find a copy at your local newsstand.

While you're at the Shutterbug site, do a Search for Steve Bedell. Mr. Bedell is a Master Photographer and uses natural light as well as studio lighting. He has a free e-newsletter so you might want to sign up for it.

Check at your library for books on photographic lighting. Any book by the late Monte Zucker will be worth reading. Mr. Zucker was a Master Portrait Photographer and wrote books on lighting and posing.

I believe its always best to do some research and educate yourself before investing money in anything. What works well for one person may be totally unsuitable for you.
What should my basic amateur SLR setup be?
Okay, so my camera's hardly amateur, but it's only because I decided to invest. So I have:
My body: Canon EOS 40D
My *only* lens: Canon 28-135 zoom
My flash: Canon Speedlite 430EX
I've also got a CF card, a good strap, a collapsible tabletop tripod, a UV filter, and a camera bag.

What other lenses are necessary? A telephoto, or a macro? What other basic accessories should I pick up? Thanks.
Before you spend any more money, take a class in photography.

I already see some flaws in your choices.

There is nothing wrong with a 40D, but it is NOT an entry level DSLR, so you could have saved some money initially buy purchasing the fine Canon 450D
The Canon 28-135 mm lens is perfect for a 35 mm camera, but not for your standard lens on your 40D ... a 18-55 mm would have given you a medium wide angle to medium telephoto lens range ... as it is you have a normal to telephoto zoom .... tough to shoot groups or landscapes.
In the beginning there is usually no reason to buy an external flash until you start shooting things like events and have at least a years experience behind you.
You should have at least three or four good 2GB cards or better.
The neck strap that came with the camera is good enough, buying a second one was a waste of money.
A collapsible tripod sounds like you bought a gray market camera and they threw it in as a sweetener. (not useful at all for your fine camera)
The UV filter is a must ... good thing you have it.
A camera bag ... as long as it doesn't say, "I have cameras in me ... steal me now" it should be fine, but a generic back pack is more practical.
Best digital camera for amateur photographer?
Requirements:

1. Easy to use; hopefully fairly intuitive.

2. MUST take closeups, preferally 12" or closer.

3. Will do most things automatically if desired but does allow user to set certain functions such as flash (on or off), various simplified light settings (cloudy day, dark room, etc.).

4. Must have Shake Reduction or other feature which counteracts shaky hands.

5. Must not cost more than $150; closer to $100 would be better.

6. I am considering a Samsung S730. Anyone have any experience with this camera?

Also: How important is the number of megapixels? For the amateur photographer who takes primarily photos of family, vacation scenery, etc., what would be adequate and what would be overkill?
Go to steves-digicams.com for reviews of various digicams.

Shutterbug Magazine publishes Buyer's Guides and you should be able to find it at shutterbug.com.
How Do I Fit A Flasher/Indicator Relay To My Kawasaki ZXR 750 H1?
I don't have a manual for the bike and i'm an amateur when it comes to bike mechanicals/electrics.
Also see my previous question for the original problem.
This is from the Haynes manual for the ninja 750-900.
The relay (brown & red wires) is mounted under the seats, on 7R models remove the side panel to improve access. Take off the old one, put in the new one There are some very good ninja sites, if you have any problems suggest you contact them.

5/12/2009
Been having another look thru the Ninja manual, all the flasher relays have only 2 wires shown. Orange & brown/red.
Which lens would be best buy for an amateur interested in Portrait/Fashion Photography?
I have a Canon EOS 1000D(I will upgrade to a better one when I am done saving money for it) with 18-55 Kit Lens. I am ready to upgrade my kit. I am planning to buy a prime lens first, but I think I won't be able to shoot events then. Also I am thinking of getting Canon Speedlite 480EX Flash. Please help me out with my dilemma.
Except for shooting runway events and using a flash diffuser, forget the speed light. It is perhaps the worst lighting you can use when shooting fashion or portraits. For this, you need a minimum of two light sources, one key and one fill to do any justice to your model.

For now, use the 18-55 mm lens at its 55 mm setting and practice composing your shots and directing the models.

If you need some ideas for poses, look on Model Mayhem or One Model Place.

While a prime lens like the 50 mm f/1.4 is an excellent portrait lens, when shooting fashion the better lens is the 24-70 mm f/2.8, but you will have to save your pennies for a while before you can budget for it.
What is a good gift idea for an amateur photographer?
I'm thiniking of getting my good friend who loves photography as a hobby a birthday gift that is photography related (price range from $40 to $200). Any ideas? He has a Cannon 40D, 5 different types of good lenses, and a flash.
You could get an affordable lens that is within your budget and throw it together with these camera button badge pins: www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?lis…
Advice for a very amateur wedding photographer?
I'm shooting a friend's wedding next week and have no idea what I'm doing. I'll be taking pics of the bride, groom and family in various configurations beforehand, and then pictures of the actual ceremony. I'll be using a digital camera and maybe a film camera for some black & white shots. I'll be using a tripod, and won't be using a flash if I can help it.
Any suggestions on posing, lighting, anything?
Use backlighting.
Avoid the sun.
Use the black and white and sepia setting on the digital to get some variety.
Don't overthink the posing.
My favorite pictures of any wedding or event are the candid pictures, not the posed pictures.
Place yourself in an unassuming but good position to get as many pictures during the ceremony and reception, as possible.
Have fun!
